Why They're Quoted Separately
Tree removal and stump grinding use entirely different equipment, take different amounts of time, and present different risks. Quoting them as one bundled price obscures the actual scope and makes it impossible for a homeowner to value-engineer (for example, deciding to skip the stump on a tree being removed in a wooded back lot).
That said, when both are scheduled together, almost every Greenville tree service β including us β offers a meaningful discount over the standalone prices.
When You Need Both
Removing a tree in your front yard, near a sidewalk, in a sodded lawn, or anywhere visible? Get the stump ground. A 12-inch above-grade stump is a tripping hazard, a mower obstacle, a termite magnet, and a long-term eyesore.
Removing a tree in deep woods at the back of an acre lot? You can leave the stump. Nature will reclaim it in 5β10 years and nothing of practical value is lost.
Cost Examples (Greenville Area)
A mature 60-foot loblolly pine in a Mauldin backyard: $950 removal + $185 stump grinding (bundled $1,050). A heritage 80-foot water oak over a Greenville rooftop: $2,400 crane-assisted removal + $385 stump grinding (bundled $2,650). A pine grove of 8 dead trees on a Travelers Rest lot: $4,800 removal + $675 for all 8 stumps (bundled $5,200).
Timing Considerations
Removal and grinding can happen the same day, but often the grinding crew comes back a day or two later β especially after big jobs that produce significant chip volume on-site. If you want same-visit grinding, just ask at quote time and we'll dispatch the grinder with the removal crew.
Our Recommendation
If the stump will be in any visible or used area of the yard, grind it. Bundle with removal for the best price. If the stump is in deep woods you never visit, save the money and let nature handle it.
FAQ
Can I grind a stump myself?
Rental grinders are available, but a 24-inch hardwood stump can take 4+ hours of grueling work. Most homeowners find professional grinding cheaper than the rental, fuel, and time.
Do I have to grind the stump right after removal?
No. Stumps can be ground months or years later. Pine stumps decay faster; oak stumps stay solid for decades.
What about chemical stump removal?
Chemical 'stump rotters' work very slowly (12β24 months) and leave a soft, punky stump still in place. Grinding is faster and more complete.
