What 'Below Grade' Really Means
Most reputable grinders go 6 to 10 inches below ground level. That depth is enough to eliminate the visible stump, allow turf to establish, and prevent most resprouting. For homeowners planning to replant in the same spot, or to pour a slab over the area, we can grind 14 inches or deeper on request. Cheaper operators sometimes 'chase the top' β grinding only the visible portion and leaving the structural root mass intact. That's not a service we offer.
Our Equipment Handles Tight Backyards
Many Greenville-area properties have narrow gates and fenced backyards that won't accommodate full-sized truck-mounted grinders. We operate compact self-propelled grinders that fit through a 36-inch gate while still chewing through hardwood stumps without complaint. For larger commercial jobs we bring out our heavy-tow grinders with 100+ HP heads that can level a 4-foot pine stump in under 30 minutes.
What Happens to the Grindings
Stump grinding produces a generous pile of wood chips mixed with soil. By default we mound the chips back into the hole, tamp them down, and rake the area smooth β at no extra charge. If you'd prefer the chips hauled away, we can do that for a modest disposal fee. Many of our customers actually love the chips as free mulch for natural areas elsewhere on the property.
- βStandard service: backfill the cavity and rake smooth
- βOptional: full chip haul-off
- βOptional: replace grindings with screened topsoil (sod-ready)
- βOptional: complete root surface grinding for surface roots radiating from the stump
Replanting in the Same Spot
It's a common question: 'Can I plant a new tree right where the old one was?' Technically yes, but it's not ideal. Stump grindings break down slowly and tie up nitrogen as they decompose, which can starve a new sapling. We recommend planting 4β6 feet away, or removing the grindings entirely and replacing with screened topsoil if you need to use the exact location. Our estimator will walk you through the best option for your situation.
Stump Grinding Pricing
Single small stumps (under 12 inches across) start at $95β$135. Medium stumps (12β24 inches) typically run $150β$275. Large pine and oak stumps over 30 inches range from $300 to $550. Volume discounts apply when we grind multiple stumps in one visit β most Greenville customers save 25β40% per stump when bundling 3 or more.
