Types of Pruning We Perform
Different goals require different techniques. A crown-cleaning removes only dead, dying, and diseased wood and is the bread-and-butter of mature-tree care. Crown-thinning selectively reduces the density of the canopy to improve light penetration and reduce wind sail β critical for Upstate properties where summer thunderstorms regularly produce 50+ mph gusts. Crown-raising lifts the lowest branches to provide clearance over lawns, sidewalks, and driveways. Structural pruning on young trees corrects co-dominant leaders and weak branch unions before they become an expensive removal in 15 years.
- βCrown cleaning β removing deadwood, disease, and broken limbs
- βCrown thinning β selective branch removal to reduce wind load
- βCrown raising β clearance pruning over driveways, roofs, and walkways
- βCrown reduction β shortening overly long limbs without topping
- βStructural pruning for young trees (5β15 years old)
- βVista pruning to restore views without harming tree health
Why Topping Is Never Acceptable
If a contractor offers to 'top' your tree, walk away. Topping β cutting back to stubs with no regard for branch collars β is the most damaging practice in arboriculture. It removes the tree's ability to produce food, triggers a flush of weakly attached water sprouts, exposes the trunk to decay, and dramatically increases failure risk within 3β5 years. We will never top a tree, and we'll always offer a proper reduction alternative when a tree truly is too large for its space.
When to Prune in the Upstate
Most species do best with dormant-season pruning (December through early March) when sap is down and pathogens are inactive. However, oaks in particular should NOT be pruned April through July to avoid attracting beetles that spread oak wilt. Cherries, plums, and other Prunus species prefer summer pruning. Dead, broken, or hazardous limbs can β and should β be removed any time of year. Our estimators will tell you the ideal window for your specific trees.
Equipment & Safety
Our climbers work on saddles and ropes inspected daily, with backup tie-ins on every cut over 4 inches. We use sterilized hand saws and chainsaws between trees when working in areas with active disease pressure (fire blight, oak wilt, Dutch elm). Bucket trucks are used where access allows, but Upstate properties often require climbing β and we have the trained, drug-tested climbers to do it safely.
Trimming Pricing in Greenville
A typical residential pruning job in the Greenville area runs $275β$1,200 per tree depending on size, access, and the volume of material removed. Small ornamentals (under 25 ft) start at $175. Large oaks and mature pines requiring climbing typically fall in the $450β$900 range. We give honest estimates and never inflate scope. See the full pricing guide for detailed ranges.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I prune oaks in the Upstate?
Outside the AprilβJuly beetle season to avoid oak wilt transmission. Late fall through early spring is ideal.
What's the difference between trimming and pruning?
We use them interchangeably. Industry term is 'pruning' under ANSI A300; 'trimming' is the homeowner-friendly word.
Is topping ever OK?
No. Topping creates weakly attached water sprouts, decay pockets, and long-term hazard. Reduction pruning is the correct alternative.
How often do mature trees need pruning?
Most healthy mature trees benefit from professional pruning every 3β5 years.
Will pruning hurt my tree?
Properly executed ANSI A300 pruning improves health and structure. Improper cuts cause decay and hazard.
